Missouri farmer says still too wet to plant

An eastern Missouri farmer says it’s still too wet to start planting. Jay Schutte who grows corn and soybeans near Mexico, Missouri tells Brownfield Ag News, “We’re putting on anhydrous ammonia right now so we’re working towards that direction. But progress has been kind of frustrating this year. It seems like we can’t miss a rain. It’s just been so cool we just haven’t had very good weather for drying the soil down.”

Schutte tells Brownfield it’s anyone’s guess when he can start planting because every other day the forecast changes between rain and no rain.

“We’ve got our ducks in a row. We’re ready to go. You know, once we get rolling it doesn’t take long to get caught up.”

Schutte says he WAS able to burn some acres for CRP about a week ago and that took a lot of pressure off. There are some farmers in Central Missouri who have started planting corn but Southeast Missouri, which is typically first, is lagging behind.
