An early-week period of warm, relatively tranquil weather across the central and eastern U.S. will yield to a more active pattern as the week progresses. Meanwhile, a storm system currently affecting much of California will continue to drift southward near the Pacific Coast for several days before finally turning eastward around mid-week. Subsequently, the system will traverse the Desert Southwest before reaching the Gulf Coast late in the week. Meanwhile, a strong cold front will reach the northern Plains and upper Midwest by Wednesday. As the front continues to race eastward during the mid- to late-week period, chilly conditions will engulf most areas east of the Rockies, with the core of the cold air affecting the Midwest and Northeast. On Thursday and early Friday, snow may blanket northern New England. Late-week freezes can be expected as far south as the Ohio Valley and the northern mid-Atlantic.
