MO Corn Growers president worried about ‘river guys’

Wet ground and more wet weather in the forecast have dampened planting aspirations in much of Missouri, not to mention most of the Midwest. Mike Moreland, who farms in western Missouri, is president of the Missouri Corn Growers Association, “Mother Nature’s not been kind to us. Normally, this time of year we’re in the field, getting fertilizer on and getting ready to plant corn, if not having some corn in the ground by now.”

Moreland tells Brownfield Ag News he’s still several weeks away from planting and he’s really concerned about the “river guys” who had a very tough 2019, “With all the floods we had last year, the levee system has not been put back to normal yet, so if do get some big rain events you know I think there’s going to be a lot more flooding again this year. I worry about those guys.”

But, Moreland tells Brownfield he’s still optimistic that the 2020 growing season will be better than 2019. Moreland says he’s more worried about the impact, right now, of wet weather on farmers than any impacts from the coronavirus outbreak to his operation.
