March in Indiana warmer than normal

The USDA reports March weather in Indiana was unseasonably warm, with statewide temperatures more than four degrees above average.

The month started off dry, but the last three weeks were wet, pushing precipitation more than 1.5 inches above normal, limiting fieldwork, including delays for fertilizer and herbicide application.

Even with the unusual conditions, the winter wheat ratings improved, with 66% of the crop in good to excellent condition, 7% higher than the end of February.

Muddy conditions are a concern for spring calving and the supply and quality of hay are also issues.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume April 6th.
