As the York County food bank scrambles to meet increased demand for their services, it has opened up a second location in East York to fill a need in the community amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Never during the organization's 40-year history has it experienced such a demand for food, a release from the Food Bank notes.

There will be a food distribution held at the second location on Tuesday. The new East York Food Hub is located at 1094 Haines Road, next to the Salvation Army.

"This new facility is a game changer for us," said CEO & President Jennifer Brillhart.  "We will now be able to fully serve the growing numbers that are in need of food assistance in York County.  The larger space will allow Food Bank volunteers to now safely pack emergency food boxes and safely accommodate the large numbers of people in need."

Becca Fink of Hanover loads up a box of food at the York County Food Bank. Fink's husband, Stephen, works for the Department of Commerce, and with the shutdown now over a month old, the family has been forced to rely on local food banks within the area.

Earlier this month, food banks waived restrictions for eligibility for any persons who are out of work without pay, including employees of non-essential businesses that have voluntarily shutdown.

"During this time of major precautions to reduce risks of spreading COVID-19, those out of work, those who rely on college meal plans, school meals to feed their children, and those who are isolated may not know where to turn for food," State Agriculture Secretary Russell  Redding said in a statement. "No Pennsylvanian should go hungry, even in these extraordinary times."
