Former governor: Taking roses to his wife, whom he can't visit

Former Gov. Marty Schreiber's devotion to his wife, and to spreading information on Alzheimer's, is legendary. Now he's cut off from visiting her.

By last Friday, Marty Schreiber, Wisconsin's 39th governor, hadn't seen his wife, Elaine, in over week, not since the Lutheran Home assisted living facility where she lives went on lockdown to protect residents from the spread of coronavirus.

They've been married close to 60 years, but Elaine has Alzheimer's disease and moved into the Lutheran Home four years ago. Schreiber's devotion to his wife, and to spreading information on Alzheimer's, is legendary.

And so Schreiber brought two-dozen white roses for her and took them to the facility.

Under the lockdown procedures, he had to leave the flowers for her between the two doors at the entrance to the facility. He asked the staff to divide the roses up and put a few at each table in the dining area.

He missed Elaine terribly, but the Lutheran Home staff has been helping him deal with the separation forced upon them by the virus.

"They are doing a great job of sending me photos on the cellphone," Schreiber said.
