Updates on Election Changes


Alabama

Alabama Secretary of State, John Merrill (R), Requested an Emergency Opinion from the State Attorney General asking if the Governor has the Power to Postpone Alabama's March 31st Primary Runoff Elections.

A Press Release issued by Merrill's Office stated, "In order to effectively practice social distancing, as recommended by the President of the United States, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), the Alabama Department of Public Health, etc., the March 31 Runoff Election must be postponed.” Alabama's March 31 primary runoff elections include races for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate and two U.S. House seats.

Kentucky

Kentucky Secretary of State, Michael Adams (R), Delayed the State’s May 19th Presidential, Congressional, and State Legislative Primaries until June 23rd.

Adams Delayed the Election using a State Law allowing for Elections to be Postponed by up to 35 days when a State of Emergency has been Declared for All or Part of an Election area. Gov. Andy Beshear (D) Declared a State of Emergency on March 6th.

New York City

New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio (D), Announced the Cancellation of the Special Election for Queens Borough President, which was Scheduled for March 24th.

New York

New York Governor, Andrew Cuomo (D), Signed an Executive Order Reducing the Petition Signature Requirement for Primary Candidates and Suspending Signature Collection as of the End of Mar. 17th, Tuesday, for Congressional, State Legislative and Judicial Offices.

Douglas A. Kellner (D), Co-Chair of the New York State Board of Elections, Confirmed that Discussions were underway about the Possibility of Delaying the Primary from April 28th to June 23rd in the interest of containing the Virus’s Spread, but he added that No Final Decision had been reached. The Decision ultimately would rest with the Governor and the State Legislature, he said in an Interview.

LOCAL ELECTIONS: For this week have been Delayed Statewide due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Village Elections across New York were Scheduled to be held Wednesday, March 18th. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) Signed an Executive Order Postponing those until April 28th, the Day of the Presidential Primary in New York. 'Our top priority has been keeping New Yorkers safe and stopping the spread of the Novel Coronavirus,' Cuomo said in a Statement.

South Carolina

South Carolina Governor, Henry McMaster (R), Postponed Municipal and County Elections Scheduled in March and April. McMaster said they would be Rescheduled for sometime after May 1st.
