A 60-year-old woman was killed after her car slammed into a semi-truck that braked suddenly in Deuel County on Friday, police said.

The crash happened shortly after noon on Interstate 29, five miles west of the town of Toronto, South Dakota Highway Patrol spokesman Tony Mangan said.

A 2005 Peterbilt Conventional 379 semi-truck pulling a full trailer and a pup trailer was heading north on I-29 when the driver stopped suddenly because two dogs ran across the road, Mangan said.

The woman, who was driving a 2013 Mazda Sport northbound on I-29, crashed into the back of the semi-truck, Mangan said. She died at the scene.

The 49-year-old man driving the semi-truck was not hurt. The driver's name has been released.
