Hybrid key to managing N

An agronomist says the first consideration for managing nitrogen this year should be the corn hybrid.

“I guess I’m really talking about response to nitrogen by hybrid, and how that hybrid will respond to nitrogen. Whether it’s all upfront, or how do you maximize yield with that hybrid?”

He tells Brownfield growers can refer to a hybrid’s response-to-nitrogen- score to help plan applications.

“And then I think the rest of it falls into place with population, looking at how to manage with a fungicide. And really that’s going to be a system approach, but it’s going to start with hybrid by nitrogen.”

Zuk is concerned nitrogen deficiencies will be common in 2020 because very little N was applied last fall.
