When it comes to making a city go, look no further than its staff. For a city the size of Brandon, it’s all about the seasonal part-time staff that helps keep things running efficiently.

The city of Brandon is now hiring for summertime help, and although there’s still several inches of snow on the ground in the area, now is the time if you’re interested in working this summer.

The city of Brandon is looking for several seasonal employees to work in various positions, including at the Brandon Golf Course.

City administrator Bryan Read said they are currently reviewing applications and hope to have all positions filled in the coming months.

“Without our seasonal staff, we wouldn’t be able to do a lot of things,” Read said. “It really does make things go and it’s very important to us.”

In addition to operating the pool and parks, summertime staff is needed to help patch the streets and mow public spaces. The golf course, which features a pro shop, clubhouse and lounge, also needs workers during the peak months.

“The golf course wouldn’t be able to function without the help,” Read said. “We usually try and get everything in front of the city council in March if we can. We do have some activities starting in April, so we like to have everyone hired in March or April at the latest.”

Open positions currently available at the city include:

Public Works Maintenance - Streets and facilities maintenance

Parks - Parks maintenance

Summer Recreation - Summer recreation attendant

Golf Course

- Pro Shop Assistant

- Pro Shop Attendant

- Golf Cart attendant

- Golf Course Maintenance

- Beverage Cart / Lounge bartender

- Community Room server/busser

Swimming pool - All pool staff

Read said there is a combination of new employees each year along with new faces. He said high school kids looking for jobs right out of school and headed to college makes up several of the positions.

“We may end up retaining those kids for a few years through college,” he said. “A lot of high school students will work at the pool and they’ll keep that job through college. So if you get in early, you have a decent summer job for three, four, five years.”

With the city of Brandon continuing to creep closer to 10,000 people, Read said the number of seasonal employees has grown with it. The pool had more than 20 lifeguards last year and Read said the public works department doubled in the number of seasonal employees last summer.

“We’ve definitely seen an increase of employees over the years,” Read said. “It comes fast, so if people are interested, now is the time. We need them, and it’s so important to Brandon to keep things going in the summer.”

The Brandon swimming pool is scheduled to open on Memorial Day weekend, weather permitting. That holiday lands each year at the end of May, but Read said there is a lot of training that will begin before that weekend.
