SD Stockgrowers, R-CALF petition to preserve cattle ID choices

The South Dakota Stockgrowers Association and R-CALF USA are circulating petitions that they say is an effort to preserve animal identification choices for cattle producers.

The petitions urge the South Dakota State Veterinarian to preserve cattle owners’ right to choose from among various animal identification methods and devices, such as eartags, brands, tattoos and backtags.

A lawsuit by ranchers and R-CALF against the USDA caused the agency to withdraw a plan to prohibit all other forms of animal ID other than RFID eartags. That would have also required ranchers to submit a premises registration.

The on-line petitions are to be circulated for a year.
