Pick any of the keywords for this month from the Monthly Keyword Challenge, or the Monthly Motif Challenge, and make connections. This month choices are Girl, Any, Love, Red, Note, Throne. My choice – Red.
1- RED. The theme for both the February Key Word Reading Challenge and the February Monthly Motif Challenge involve “Red” and I decided to read All Systems Red, Martha Wells. Coincidentally, this also works for the February Book Award Reading Challenge because it was one of the winners of the 2018 Alex Awards.
2 – KIM. I decided to read All Systems Red because Kim mentioned she loved it (#AMonthofFaves The Best Books We Read This Year [The 2018 Edition]). Kim also mentioned how much she loved Spinning Silver, Naomi Novik. I read that last year and it became one of The Best 14 Books I Read in 2019.
3 – WINTER. Winter is an important element in Spinning Silver, and coincidentally, I read it in the Winter last year. We shared On Our Winter Reading List [The 2020 Edition] back in December, and I’ve now read all 3 books that I put on it – loving 2 and couldn’t finish 1.
4 – DNF. The 1 book I couldn’t finish is Milkman by Anna Burns. It’s my first DNF (did not finish) for the year. My first for last year was Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James. I just couldn’t get into it and ultimately gave up.
5 – RED. Notice the “Red” in the title of Black Leopard, Red Wolf – which is the theme for the February Monthly Motif Challenge – “Read a book with a red cover or with the word RED in the title. Bonus if it has both.” I just unintentionally circled back around to the the first connection!
