Markets react to coronavirus

Commodities and the broader markets reacted Monday to uncertainties about the spread of the coronavirus in China.  Five cases have now been confirmed in the U.S.

Markets were mostly lower Monday on the potential global demand impact if coronavirus continues to spread, including a more than 450-point drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, along with big losses in cattle and hog futures.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says it is closely monitoring the respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus and is investigating more than 70 pending cases in four states, including Illinois. The outbreak in China began in the province of Wuhan and has spread in China and among other Asian countries.

Beijing reportedly has imposed a quarantine on 50-million Chinese citizens.
