Illinois Stewardship Alliance helping farmers form soil health policies

Illinois farmers interested in soil health will soon have a larger voice in policy discussions.

Liz Rupel with the Illinois Stewardship Alliance tells Brownfield they are starting a new Soil Health Champion Caucus comprised mainly of farmers.

“We felt that decisions have always been made maybe without farmers present at the table. We wanted to change that and invite farmers to be a part of the conversation.”

She says they want to show that there is a soil health community that can create change.

“If you are someone who is passionate about soil health, that has kind of an interest in soil health policies, maybe creating something new in Illinois and working collaboratively with other farmers and soil health advocates, this us a group for you.”

The caucus kicks off on March 12th in Springfield. To join, contact the Illinois Stewardship Alliance.

Brownfield interviewed Rupel at the Conservation Cropping Seminar in Mt. Vernon.
