Cautious optimism for cattle, hog markets in 2020

A market analyst says he’s cautiously optimistic about where cattle and hog markets are headed in 2020.

President Trump’s recent trifecta of trade agreements provides a lot of upside market potential for US beef, pork, and poultry producers

But, market analyst Chip Nellinger with Illinois-based Blue Reef Agri-Marketing says producers should proceed with guarded optimism.  “You absolutely need to be protecting yourself,” he says.  “And willing and able.  Number one, have a plan and know where your break evens are.  Know what you need.  And number two – execute that plan when you have opportunities.”

“Because with one tweet this China deal could fall apart,” he says.  “All the virus issues out there – both human and livestock.  It doesn’t take much and we could tumble these markets back lower.”

Nellinger says producers need to use all the tools available to them to mitigate their risk and protect the bottom line.
