Google provides Chromebooks ahead of 2020 Census

The United Way Association of South Carolina is expected to receive 120 Chromebooks to help people access the U.S. Census online.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — As the nation prepares for the 2020 Census, the United Way Association of South Carolina is looking for ways to make sure everyone gets counted.

They partnered with SC Grantmaker's Network and Together SC to reach everyone in the state.

Google is also helping, as this will be the first time that the census form will be available online.

"Google generously loaned 120 Chromebooks to the United Way Association on behalf of the 2020 census effort that we are undertaking in partnership with the SC Grantmaker's Network," says Naomi Lett, president and CEO of the United Way Association of South Carolina.

The Chromebooks will be distributed around the state, to local and state businesses.

"We're looking at areas where either high poverty, infrastructure or other impediments may prevent people from being able to take the census online," says Lett. "For South Carolina particularly, we especially need some tools to help with that."

It is important that everyone is counted.

"Everybody has a value that lends to how much money goes to the schools, how much money goes to the roads, how much money goes to the local hospitals," says Lett. "All of those things will be determined by each person who participates. When someone doesn't participate. That community loses that money for 10 years."

The census will be available online starting in mid-March. I will also be available by mail and by phone.
