[sample/affiliate] It seems a while since I tested out a new mascara so I was really pleased to give L’Oreal Paris Paradise Extatic Mascara (or is it Extatic Paradise?).
You’re always on safe ground with L’Oreal mascaras as they have some of the best formula patents around. It’s immediately clear that this is a long making formula rather than a fattening formula. I got some amazing lengthening so if your look is for sky high, spiky lashes, it’s for you. It’s not for you if you like a very thick lash fringe – I loved the way that it took my lashes upwards (and they stayed) but if you have sparse lashes I don’t think it’s necessarily the right formula. My lashes are middle ground – not long but not stumpy, not fulsome but not sparse so it’s a different kind of eye look for me that I really liked. It’s best with kohl I think which tends to give lashes a colour grounding so you don’t look like your black spikes are shooting off bare flesh. My first thought was that it’s a fabulous mascara for anyone with a thick lash line that needs length so I’d highly recommend it for that.
I just didn’t find it as volumising as I was expecting but the black shade is perfectly intense. Better still, because I loathe a crispy lash, it keeps lashes soft (thanks to extra castor oil). You can coat up – I needed two coats for the lengthening but I could have gone on… and I didn’t have any flaking whatsoever. I did notice a bit of under-eye smudging but at the same time I know I’d rubbed my eyes. It’s £11.99 HERE, non affiliate HERE.

I really love this mascara, I agree it’s not as volumising as others, but for cheaper mascaras this is my second favourite to the Maybelline lash sensational!

This sounds just excellent. I’ve belatedly realised I need a serious lash-lifting effect in my twilight years, and my recently purchased Chanel mascara really isn’t doing that for me. (I just love it for the bendy brush) I don’t want thick, false looking lashes, just an eye-opened effect. Also, I don’t mascara my lower lashes any more, in the (possibly madly erroneous) belief that it just adds to the awful dark circles, so any smudging wouldn’t be an issue. You’ve maybe saved me much agonised dithering, since I genuinely fear choosing mascara these days, it’s all much too bewildering! Thanks, a fab, comprehensive review as always
[Oh, mention of my dark circles reminds me, if this is permissible here: check out Catrice’s brand new hydrating/ miracle under eye concealer. I guess it’s modelled on the superb Charlotte Tilbury one (a sample of which I loved), identical presentation etc, but goes here for under a €€ fiver. It’s really astonishingly brilliant, and easily the best product for my under-eye area I’ve ever tried, and I’m well into the ‘mature’ bracket, with all that implies re little lines etc. A real transformation]
For you, I’d recommend a thin brush – it’s the fat brush that gets in the way of everything once you get older – skinny brush mascaras allow for an upsweep without over coating … such as Shiseido Imperial Lash – more expensive but better for you I think. And you can put mascara under but you just whisper the brush at them… they don’t need much. I have a lot of time for Clinique mascaras so if you fancy it get the thinnest brush one you can x
Jane, I really appreciate your taking the time to advise on this. It’s silly, but I actually get quite distressed by the wildly extensive choice available.
