EVANSVILLE, Ind. — An Evansville man involved in a Saturday night crash that sent three, including himself, to the hospital was arrested after he allegedly told police he'd smoked weed.

Ronald McMillan, 54, was reportedly seen driving at a high speed when he crashed his Ford Focus into another car. He then hit a utility pole before leaving the scene, police said.

Officers were called to the intersection of East Division and Garvin streets around 6:45 p.m. for a report of an accident with unknown injuries, according to a probable cause affidavit from the Evansville Police Department.

A caller told dispatchers one of the involved drivers left the scene on foot. The driver, later identified as McMillan, reportedly asked the caller for a ride because he didn't want to go to jail.

McMillan was found several blocks away with a cut to his forehead and no shoes. He matched the description given by the caller, police said.

He reportedly admitted to leaving the scene, telling police he didn't have a license and was on parole. He also wasn't able to provide any proof of insurance.

According to the affidavit, McMillan told police he smokes marijuana every day and had smoked it earlier the day of the crash.

He was taken to a local hospital to treat his head injury before being booked into Vanderburgh County's jail shortly after midnight Sunday. His bond has been set at $1,000.

McMillan is facing a long list of preliminary traffic and DUI charges. According to the affidavit, he has a prior DUI conviction and two prior convictions for failure to provide proof of insurance for an accident.

Two others in the car McMillan reportedly hit also needed medical attention. One complained of pain to her chest and hip and was taken to the hospital via ambulance. The other, who had pain to his back, was driven to the hospital by a family member.
