One in custody for OWI after crashing into a Waukesha County Sheriff’s squad, injuring a deputy

A Waukesha County Sheriff's Department vehicle was damaged after a crash Friday morning on I-94 near Elm Grove Road. A deputy was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

One person is in custody under suspicion of driving while impaired after the car they were driving hit a Waukesha County Sheriff's Department SUV and injured a deputy and another person. 

The crash, which involved four vehicles, took place at 9:47 a.m. Friday on I-94 near Elm Grove Road, just west of the Milwaukee County line.

Paramedics took both the deputy and another driver to a hospital, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. The deputy is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department said.

Investigators arrested a woman they believe caused the crash on suspicion of driving while high, authorities said. She refused a blood draw at a hospital and remained in custody Friday night at the Milwaukee County Jail.

The squad was hit while it was in the I-94 median near Elm Grove Road. The deputy radioed to dispatchers that she was injured and needed help.  

Officers from several area departments responded.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol are investigating. 

The crash closed all eastbound and some westbound lanes for about three hours and caused backups for more than three miles.
