A collision between a tractor-trailer and a van at about 8:22 Thursday morning left one man dead.

Prior to the crash, the tractor-trailer was traveling west on Route 30. A 1999 Chevrolet Express van was traveling south on Hawbaker Road and stopped at a properly-posted stop sign, perpendicular to Route 30, according to police.

As the van attempted to turn left onto the highway, it was struck by the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Brian Mellott, 59, of Harrisonville, attempted to apply his brakes and turned left in an attempt to avoid a crash.
