Possible hazardous material closes Hueneme Road in Oxnard

Staff reports

Concerns about a possible hazardous material spurred an investigation that closed a stretch of Hueneme Road on Friday morning in Oxnard.

A 1-gallon container of an unknown liquid was reported to be smoking or giving off visible fumes at Hueneme Road and J Street.

A label on the container identified it as muriatic acid, according to crews at the scene.

Hueneme Road was closed from Pelican Pointe Court in Port Hueneme to Perkins Road in Oxnard so crews could investigate.

Multiple fire resources and a hazardous materials team were dispatched to the incident that was reported at 9:06 a.m. By 9:55 a.m., some resources were being canceled and crews were planning to neutralize the substance.

Muriatic acid — also known as hydrochloric acid — is a pungent substance that is used in the production of polyvinyl chloride for plastic, as a descaling agent and in leather processing. While it can damage the skin, it is commonly available.
