Delta is showing excellent award ticket availability in business class between several US cities and Japan for 64K miles one-way or 100K round trip in business class. While this is not on Delta One suites routes, it is still an excellent price for business class on long-haul routes, particularly for pricing in SkyMiles.

The Deal

  • Excellent Delta One availability from or connecting in Seattle to Osaka (KIX) and Tokyo (HND) from March through June 2020, with prices starting at 100K round trip in business class
  • Book at Delta.com

Key Details

  • 767-300 on the long-haul, not suites, but flat bed 1-2-1
  • Available from the west coast for 100K RT in business, many cities (both east coast and small market) for 120K RT to Osaka; from 140RT to Tokyo
  • Detla is of course an instant 1:1 Amex transfer partner, but remember that Amex charges a small excise tax on transfers to US-based programs

Quick Thoughts

Again, these are not on routes served by Delta One suites. However, it is still flat bed 1-2-1 business class, which should be a plenty comfortable way to get to Japan if you’re flying in business class.

TPG is reporting good availability on many routes from March to June. You might even be able to catch the tail end of Sakura / Cherry Blossom festival. Here’s a look at Seattle to Osaka in April and May for 100K + $60.15 round trip nonstop in Delta One.

Most routes include at least that one stop in Seattle, but you can originate in Los Angeles, Phoenix. or San Francisco for the same number of miles. I see east coast cities like Atlanta for 120K + $149.25 round trip. I even see that same price out of small markets like Albany, NY, so it’s worth trying your local airport even if it’s not a major market.

If you’d rather go to Tokyo, prices start at 140K miles round trip.

I expect that this will be quite popular and since most of the options are connecting through Seattle, everyone is likely competing for the same bucket of seats. I wouldn’t be shocked if this goes relatively quickly. If you’re sitting on SkyMiles and Japan is in your plans, this might be worth making a move.

I visited Japan in early April this year and the weather was comfortable and the experience excellent. Whether you fly into Osaka or Tokyo, the entire country is well-connected via rail, so you can get almost anywhere you’d like to go. It would also be a good opportunity to put together a use of the United excursionist perk if that intrigues you. I spent 5 nights in Osaka several years ago and loved it. Kyoto and Kobe are short train rides away (the latter being worth it for a steak for lunch), and I found Osaka to be pretty energetic on its own.
