United Soybean Board hosts salute to service event

United Soybean Board directors gave back to first responders this week with a salute to service event featuring soy-based products.

Farmers visited a St. Louis fire station to thank firefighters and have a dinner including pork cutlets fried in high oleic soybean oil.

Don Wyss, a new director based in northeastern Indiana, said the event focused on giving back to others and highlighted the resilience of farmers during a challenging year.

“It was just a nice corroboration between first responders that do so much around the country and for us to express our gratitude and thank them in a way that they get recognized for the hard work they do at the same time the hard work that we’re doing here in agriculture that is bringing food to their table so we decided to have a dinner together,” he says.

He tells Brownfield it’s the perfect time of the year to give back.

“It’s just a perfect time to spend time together and not only promote soybeans but also what first responders do for us every day,” he says.

Wyss grows corn and soybeans in Fort Wayne. He says the growing season was a challenge with crops not being planted until after the first of June. But a good growing season resulted in better-than-expected yields.

The event kicked off the United Soybean Board December meeting in St Louis.
