Missouri Farm Bureau policy focuses on dairy producers, feral hogs

Missouri Farm Bureau delegates set policy aimed at eradicating feral hogs and helping dairy farmers. State Legislative Affairs Director BJ Tanksley tells Brownfield policy addresses the Federal Milk Marketing Order system.

“Are there specific solutions there? There are ideas, but [it’s] more about starting a conversation and making sure that we’re continuing to support the producers to try to help that industry that we do know has been through some hard times recently,” Tanksley told Brownfield Ag News following the Missouri Farm Bureau policy setting session.

There was extensive discussion about the problems feral hogs are causing especially in the southern third of Missouri. National Legislative Program Director Spencer Tuma says policy focuses on getting rid of the destructive animals.

“Total eradication, methods of eradication, and also strengthening law enforcement’s ability to catch and prosecute those who are transporting feral hogs,” Tuma told Brownfield.

That policy was recommended by a Missouri Farm Bureau task force formed to study the issue.
