Magical Meteors

An amazing meteor shower will be visible in Florida this month, and if you’re lucky enough to be on Sanibel Island, you should be able to grab a great seat!

The Geminid meteor shower is nearly 200 years old, with the first ever recorded observation noted in 1833 from a riverboat in Mississippi.

It will peak this year on Dec. 13 and 14, but even after its peak, bright meteors should be able to be seen for a few days.

As the meteor shower will take place just after a full moon, the sky might not be as bright compared to other years, but experts say you should still be able to see 20-30 meteors an hour. The meteors will peak around 2 a.m. local time, but can start to be seen earlier in the evening at around 9 p.m.

As Sanibel has very little light pollution, it’s a magical place to catch all of the beauty in store.  Just mark your calendar and head out to the beach at Ocean’s Reach to find the perfect place to stargaze!
