USMCA inches closer in compromises

Progress on the U.S. Mexico Canada trade deal appears to be inching forward.

Top negotiators from the U.S. and Mexico are meeting this week to resolve demands from House Democrats.  Compromises have been made on drug protections while labor rights remain a sticking point as negotiations continue Thursday.

Farmers for Free Trade co-executive director Brian Kuehl tells Brownfield the biggest enemy at this point is time.

“If this agreement does not get passed by Congress in 2019, we drag into 2020, the end of January 2020 is the Iowa Caucuses, we really feel a sense of urgency and want to get it done by Christmas if we can.”

Farmers for Free Trade has initiated a concerted effort to push 20 key Democratic congressional districts for support on the agreement and highlight its importance to agriculture.
