Lessons learned in 2019 and planning for 2020

The 2019 season has been a learning lesson for many Midwestern farmers.

Southern Ohio Farmer Greg Corcoran wrapped up harvest two weeks before Thanksgiving. He says there was a lot of variability in his yields

“We had some fields that actually did exceptionally well, we also had some fields that really were head-scratchers for us, ” he says. “Towards the end we ended up harvesting some of our crops in which we were doing a couple replants where we got flooded out so those were some pretty poor yields.”

Corcoran says his biggest take away from this season was patience.

“It’s okay to be patient and it’s okay if you can’t plant it- don’t push it,” he says. “Because we ended up with some acres that we replanted a couple of times and really spent too much money on our input costs.”

He says this season will impact his planting decisions in the 2020.

“Hopefully we get the windows that we need,” he says. “If we don’t we really need to make a decision if we can use that land for something better, because putting more inputs into it doesn’t gain us anything and we end up losing money that way.”

Corcoran grows corn, soybeans, wheat, and popcorn in Ross, Pike, and Scioto counties.
