Another winter storm strikes this weekend: Heavy snow to the north, rain, sleet to the south

GREEN BAY – The drive home from Thanksgiving weekend could get difficult with more winter weather headed our way.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for a large swath of the state, from Milwaukee's northern suburbs to Oshkosh and Eau Claire, as a major winter storm was set to bring freezing drizzle, snow and icy roads over the weekend.

The weather service issued a more serious winter weather warning for the northern part of the state, including Wausau, Green Bay, Appleton, Rhinelander and Hayward. There, 6 to 15 inches of snow was possible.

Snow accumulations were set to be minimal overnight Friday into Saturday, with the biggest snowfall expected coming in the second round of storms — after 6 p.m. Saturday into Sunday, according to the weather service.

Most of the state could see a wintry mix — rain plus snow — as temperatures hovered above freezing, according to the weather service.

Winds could also reach 35 mph Saturday morning, prompting concerns for flooding along the lakeshore. Counties from Kenosha to Door County are under lakeshore flood warnings from noon Saturday through midnight.

The rain, snow and sleet will taper off Sunday afternoon, but roads will remain slippery through the night, according to the weather service.

"Holiday travelers should expect conditions to deteriorate across northern Wisconsin Saturday afternoon and evening," the weather service said in a statement. "Snow covered and slippery roads will continue into much of Sunday across the region."

Strong winds will make for blowing and drifting snow, according to the weather service.

"If you must travel this weekend, allow extra time to reach your destination and carry a winter survival kit in case you get stranded," the weather service said.
