No matter how long you've been hunting, there's always a new experience waiting out in the woods.

Just ask Charles Shaffer.

The 75-year-old Spring Grove man has been hunting for almost 60 years, and he bagged the buck of a lifetime this fall.

While hunting from a ground blind in October in North Codorus Township, Shaffer downed a 13-point buck with his crossbow. Shaffer said the deer weighed over 200 pounds.

“It was getting dark, and all of sudden, I saw a deer step out. I saw the big rack, and I kept telling myself to not look at the horns when I took the shot.”

After a search party of friends and family found the deer, Shaffer still couldn’t wrap his mind around what he was seeing.

“I couldn’t talk. I was so shook up when I saw how big it was,” he said. “I didn’t have words.”

As if harvesting a 13-point at 75 isn’t a big enough accomplishment, Shaffer was able to do all this despite a prosthetic leg.

Shaffer lost his leg in a motorcycle accident in 1977, but he didn’t let that keep him out of the woods.

“I still get around OK,” he said. “There are a few places in the woods I can’t get to, but I can basically get to wherever I want to go.”

Shaffer also suffered a heart attack a few years back, so he relies on his friends and family to track or drag out any downed deer.

Despite all the setbacks, Shaffer said he is as motivated as ever to keep getting out in the woods.

“You just have to make up your mind that this is what you want to do, and you do it,” Shaffer said. “This is what I like to do to relax.”
