KEWAUNEE - Authorities on Monday identified the Kewaunee deputy who shot and killed a man accused of kidnapping and shooting his ex-girlfriend, who remains in the hospital.

Kewaunee County Sheriff's Department deputy Aaron J. Schley has been on administrative leave, as is policy for an officer-involved shooting, according to the state Department of Justice. Schley has worked at the sheriff's department for eight years.

Officers were called to Hansen’s Frozen Foods on Goddard Way about 4:40 a.m. Tuesday for a report that Luis Cardona, 38, of Green Bay had abducted his 40-year-old former girlfriend and left in a black SUV.

Authorities tracked the SUV with a cellphone in the car, and Kewaunee County deputies found Cardona and the woman near a remote park to arrest Cardona. Shots were fired by Cardona, who was then shot by the deputy. Lifesaving measures were performed, but Cardona was pronounced dead on the scene.

The woman is recovering from serious — but no longer life-threatening —injuries, according to the DOJ.

At the end of its investigation, the DOJ will turn over reports to the Kewaunee County District Attorney who will decide if the officer should face criminal charges in connection to the shooting..
