Evansville, IN – A man arrested for a stabbing an Evansville man inside of a gas station in 2018 has received his sentencing for attempted murder.

Andrew Buttrum, 37, is to serve 45 years in prison.

On September 26, 2018, police were called to the 200 block of East Louisiana Street. Officers found the stabbing victim, a 58-year-old man, bleeding heavily from his neck and suffering serious damage to two fingers on his left hand.

The victim told police he was talking to another man about cookie selections at a Jimtown Marathon station when Buttrum pulled out a large knife and stabbed him in the neck and hand.

The victim reportedly said he was happy with his choice of cookie when Buttrum "told him he was a stupid (expletive) and attacked," the Courier & Press previously reported, citing a probable cause affidavit from the police.

Security camera footage from the gas station revealed Buttrum stalked the now 59-year-old victim for several minutes before violently plunging a large butcher knife directly into his neck.  Buttrum tackled the victim and repeatedly stabbed him, only stopping when the knife became lodged in the victim’s hand.

Following the attack, Buttrum ran to a nearby home, hid his bloody shirt in the backyard, changed his clothing, and left in a vehicle before police arrived.

The victim was rushed into surgery shortly after the incident. He survived and testified against Buttrum.

After a four-day trial in October, Buttrum was found guilty of attempted murder and declared mentally ill.

He was booked in September of 2018 on charges of attempted murder with a knife, battery, criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon and a parole violation.
