United Soybean Board partnership introduces soy-based motor oil

The United Soybean Board and Indianapolis-based Biosynthetic Technologies are introducing a biobased synthetic motor oil made with high oleic (oh-LAY-ick) soybean oil.

During an 18-month fleet demonstration with army, naval and postal service vehicles David Asiello with the Department of Defense says they found the product meets or exceeds their performance requirements.

“We found it increased emission readiness to reduce down time and cost savings. We found it increased engine longevity and vehicle use like reducing operational costs. We are reducing petroleum consumption by 30% which is huge to the Department of Defense and really the federal government.”

Jake Bredsguard, Vice President of Biosynthetic Technologies says future production and product development will depend on how well consumers like the product.

“Around 7,000 gallons is the production capacity we have available now. If that gets bought up fairly quick, then that would necessitate blending more and trying to produce more product. So right now, this is kind of our market trial.”

USB Director Mike Korth of Randolph, Nebraska says if demand increases for the product, soybean farmers can supply that demand.

“When I started on this journey twenty some years ago, we grew less than two billion bushels. Now we are over four billion bushels and we can crank out a lot more than we do right now.”

Indiana Soybean Alliance CEO Courtney Kingery say farmers are both the producers and consumers of this new product.

“We are always looking for ways to increase our efficiency and effectiveness back on our farms and our equipment and this is another great option for us to consider as we are looking at ways to make ourselves more efficient.”

Biosynthetic Technologies’ motor oil is recognized as a Certified Biobased Product in the USDA’s BioPreferred Program

The 5W-20 and 5W-30 motor oil can be purchased online from Amazon and Biosynthetic Technologies. Farmers are being offered a 20% trial discount.
