Taylor sugar plant set to close

The Michigan Sugar Company plans to close its cane sugar refinery in southeast Michigan because of what it calls “supply chain inconsistencies.”

Michigan Sugar purchased AmCane, based in Taylor, in 2016 to diversify into specialty and organic sugars.

The company says the loss of a deep-water port on the Detroit River ultimately led to the closing of the 100,000-ton processing plant.
