Grassley and Ernst press Feds for adequate delivery of propane

Iowa Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst are asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to consider its regulatory options to prioritize pipeline shipments of propane to Iowa.

Grassley says it’s a big concern for farmers who are trying to finish up harvest.

“We still have a lot of corn in the field—about one-fourth of our crop—and five percent of our soybeans,” Grassley says. “Livestock and poultry producers are also worried with the cold winter weather ahead.”

Grassley says the issue is transportation and infrastructure, not a nationwide supply shortage. He says if the situation worsens, the federal government may have to step in, as it did in the winter of 2013-14, “when they preempted those contracts to say, ‘you’re going to send LP gas so many days, whether you like it or not.’”

Grassley says the propane shortage “compounds the frustration and financial struggles” producers are already facing.
