Victim in Indianapolis west-side shooting identified as 16-year-old boy

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police detectives are investigating what led to a fatal shooting Sunday on the city's west side.

According to IMPD spokesman Michael Hewitt, officers responded at about 3 p.m. to a 911 caller stating they heard gunshots and a person was down at an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Woodfront Court, near 38th Street and W. Kessler Boulevard N. Drive.

When officers arrived, they found a boy who was unresponsive and with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel declared the boy dead at the scene.

The Marion County coroner's office identified the boy Tuesday as 16-year-old Elijah Taylor.

Homicide detectives canvassed the area Sunday for witnesses.

Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency also assisted in identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence. The Marion County coroner’s office has not yet released a cause of death.
