Ventura High School student collapses during school hours, dies at hospital

A Ventura High School senior collapsed during school and later died at a hospital on Thursday, according to the Ventura Unified School District.

Antonio Calderon, 17, suffered a grave health incident and collapsed during school hours, although district officials could not confirm the exact time and place. He was treated with emergency care and taken to a local hospital, where he later died. No other details were immediately released about the circumstances surrounding Calderon’s death.

Calderon was a front office aide at the high school. He previously attended Sheridan Way Elementary School and De Anza Middle School.

In a statement posted online, the district expressed condolences for Calderon’s family and friends.

“Our community has suffered a tremendous loss. The death of a student like Antonio is very hard for us to understand or accept,” the statement read.

The district sent counselors, psychologists and administrators to Ventura High on Friday to help students and employees who were processing feelings.

Funeral details were not immediately available, although district officials confirmed the family visited a funeral home on Friday for arrangements.
