Minnesota agronomist disappointed by soybean yields

An agronomist in Minnesota says soybean yields were disappointing.

Harmon Wilts covers the western half of the state for Dekalb/Asgrow.

“I think there were a few factors. One is the later planting date. Our plant height just wasn’t as tall, didn’t put as many pod sets on. Beans like it warm, hot and sunny in August as well, and we were more cool and cloudy in August.”

He tells Brownfield white mold also took a toll.

“And it’s been here for awhile (and) continues to be a challenge for us. So I think as we look into 2020, growers should really focus on white mold.”

Wilts says the focus should be on variety selection, plant population, and use of a fungicide.
