NDN Athlete of the Week winner: Maddy Burt, St. John Neumann

St. John Neumann swimmer Maddy Burt has been voted the Naples Daily News Athlete of the Week for Nov. 4-9.

Burt, a senior, won the Class 1A title in the 100-yard butterfly, becoming the first state champion in Celtics swimming history. She received 402 of the 1,241 votes (32.4 percent) in the Daily News' online poll.

Naples High football player Devin Moore finished second in the poll with 293 votes (23.6 percent). Naples cross country runner Alex Rodriguez was third with 166 votes (13.4 percent).

A new Athlete of the Week poll will be posted at 7 a.m. each Monday, and voting is open until 10 a.m. Thursday. Winners receive an Athlete of the Week T-shirt by BSN SPORTS as well as a Naples Daily News gift bag. A video featuring the winner will be posted Thursday on naplesnews.com.

The nominees for Nov. 4-9 were:

Football Offense

Mike Joyce, St. John Neumann – Rushed for 164 yards and a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass in a 35-24 loss to Miami Christian

Football Defense

Devin Moore, Naples – Returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown on the game’s opening drive in a 45-7 win over South Fort Myers

Boys Cross Country

Alex Rodriguez, Naples – Was the top Collier County finisher at the state finals, taking 28th in the Class 3A race in 16:39.77

Girls Cross Country

Grace O’Malley, Community School – Placed 22nd at the Class 1A finals in 20:02.85, the best finish among Collier County runners at the state finals

Boys Golf

Jack Irons, Naples – Shot 76-73–149 to finish sixth individually at the Class 2A state finals, leading Naples to fifth as a team

Girls Golf

Addison Klonowski, Naples – Finished tied for second at the Class 2A state finals, shooting a 72-78–150 as the Eagles took third as a team

Boys Swimming

Andrew Garner, Barron Collier – Won three championships at the Class 3-Region 3 meet, taking first in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay

Girls Swimming

Maddy Burt, St. John Neumann – Won the Class 1A state championship in the 100-yard butterfly, the first state title in program history

Volleyball

Skylar English, Barron Collier – Had 25 kills, five aces and nine digs in a five-set loss to Ocala-Vanguard in the Class 5A semifinals
