North Dakota corn harvest only 15% done

The North Dakota corn harvest is only 15 percent complete as of Sunday.

Carson Klosterman farms in the southeast part of the state and says this fall has been almost identical to a year ago.

“I remember we got snow around the eighth or tenth of October last year, it stayed cold and (the snow) hung around most of the fall. We finished up soybeans last year after Thanksgiving.”

He tells Brownfield the difference this year is more precipitation going into the fall.

“So we were saturated, and it’s just been a struggle for all crops essentially all year.”

The Richland County farmer says to his surprise, yields have been good.

“At the end of the day, it’s been a good crop to harvest. So it’s been worth the struggle a little bit.”

Klosterman is optimistic a couple weeks of good weather will be enough to finish harvesting corn.

The USDA says going into this week, 34 percent of the U.S. corn crop remains unharvested.
