Be cautious when storing wet grain

An executive with the Grain and Feed Association of Illinois says farmers should take extra caution when storing and working around wet grain.

Jeff Adkisson tells Brownfield farmers are at the tail end of a long harvest and some are working with large amounts of wet grain.

“Just exercise extreme caution. This year with the wetter crop we are concerned about quality conditions once it gets into storage. The grain quality is often a key to being safe in and around grain facilities.”

He says wet grain can clump together easily.

“It could get bridged over, a clump could plug the sump hole and we wouldn’t want anyone to go in there and try to break up a clump or try to go in there with a rod to unplug it because it may get unplugged but the farmer may go right along with it.”

Adkisson says 2019 has posed many unforeseen challenges, but he encourages farmers to keep their heads up and make safety a top priority.
