Trump says China is ‘dying to make a deal’

President Trump, speaking Tuesday to the Economic Club of New York, said the U.S. and China are close to finalizing the “phase one” trade deal.

Trump said China’s economy is struggling and the Chinese are anxious to reach an agreement.

“They are dying to make a deal. We’re the ones that are deciding whether or not we want to make a deal,” Trump said. “We’re close. A significant phase one trade deal with China could happen. It could happen soon. But we will only accept a deal if it’s good for the U.S. and our workers and our great companies.”

Trump did not specifically mention the reported disagreement over tariff rollbacks that could be a potential sticking point in completion of the deal. But he did say the U.S. will increase tariffs on China if the phase one deal is not reached.
