CHS CEO addresses propane shortages

The president of CHS is confident the backlog of propane used for drying corn is slowly easing.

Jay Debertin says CHS is one of the largest suppliers of LP in rural America.

“From a crop drying perspective, it hits so hard and is so robust that it stretches supply chains. We’ll get through it (but) there will be some challenges as we do (like) longer wait times and so forth. But that’s what comes with a drying season that can be so forceful, so fast.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the Minnesota AgriGrowth Ag and Food Summit in Minneapolis last week, he says recent cold weather has compounded the problem.

“So we carry this heavy, and there are no days off for our people. People are working seven days a week as long a days as we can be safe at, to get propane out to the producers.”

Several states, including Minnesota, have relaxed Hours of Service restrictions allowing truck drivers greater flexibility to deliver propane.
