KALAMO TWP. — Three people were killed in a two-vehicle crash on a rural Eaton County highway Monday morning, authorities said.

Vehicles headed in opposite directions on M-79 near Charlotte collided just before 8 a.m., Eaton County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Adam Morris said.

The crash occurred near the highway's intersection with Lacey Lake Road.

The three people killed were all in one vehicle, Morris said. Officials were withholding their names but said they were a 57-year-old man and two women, 64 and 81, all from the Charlotte area.

The driver of the other vehicle – a 30-year-old woman from the Vermontville area – was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, they said.

The department's crash investigators and detective bureau are still investigating the cause of the collision, which they believe to be weather-related, Morris said.

M-79 was closed for hours. It was reopened about 2 p.m.
