The media push toward the 2020 Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee will begin in earnest January 7.

That's the day of the first media walk-through, an event that usually draws hundreds of reporters, producers, technicians and editors from around the country who are eager to get their first look at the convention facilities as they begin planning coverage for the four-day convention.

Another walk-through will be held in the spring, with the convention staged, July 13-16.

Local organizers released the first details of the walk-through Friday.

“Members of the media play an important role in bringing the story and the message of the Convention to millions of voters during this critical election year,” Joe Solmonese, the CEO of the Democratic National Convention Committee, said in a statement.

“We look forward to welcoming the media to the important battleground state of Wisconsin and the beautiful Fiserv Forum, and to share with them our excitement about the values and future of the Democratic Party," he said.

Besides Fiserv Forum, other key facilities include the Wisconsin Center, UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena and the Miller High Life Theatre.

Among the subjects to be covered for registered media are information on credentials, workspaces, housing, security and the general convention timeline.

Up to 20,000 members of the media will cover the convention.

“Our mission at the Host Committee is to make the most of the incredible spotlight that will be on Milwaukee leading up to and during the 2020 Democratic National Convention. That work doesn’t start next July — it’s already begun," said Liz Gilbert, President of the Milwaukee 2020 Host Committee. "We’re thrilled to continue our efforts with the winter walk-through by showing members of the media what a special place Milwaukee is to live and visit."
