Propane problem ‘just one more thing’ in a frustrating year

Efforts to finish up the 2019 harvest are being hampered by limited supplies of propane for grain drying in parts of the Midwest.

April Hemmes, who farms in north-central Iowa near the town of Hampton, says it forced her to change her marketing plans.

“I ended up having to fill my bin and unload from my bin and haul it to the ethanol plant, which takes it at 19 percent. Doing that, though, I took a lower price, with the fall price on corn,” Hemmes says.

“It’s just one more thing in a very frustrating year for us farmers.”

Hemmes only has 50 acres of corn left to harvest, but two inches of snow this week means another delay. She says she has been pleased with her corn and soybean yields.
