Reports of shots fired on Monday between 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. have lead officials at the Douglas Police Department to issue a social media advisory about traveling into Mexico, according to officials.

"This morning the Douglas Police Department received reports of sustained automatic gunfire in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico," read the Facebook post from Douglas police.

Officials say that although there is no spillover or threats to Douglas or Cochise County, local, state, and federal agencies are actively monitoring the situation.

Lt. Mark Wilkinson of the Douglas Police Department said their office has been notified and is working with the Sheriff's Office and the Douglas port of entry, in case anyone should come seeking asylum.

Residents are cautioned to avoid unnecessary travel into Mexico at this time, officials said.
