NDN Athlete of the Week: Brady Gibson, Naples High cross country

Naples High School cross country runner Brady Gibson has been voted the Naples Daily News Athlete of the Week for Oct. 14-19.

Gibson was the individual champion of the Collier County Athletic Conference boys race, winning in 16:49.48 and helping Naples win the team title. He earned 10,228 of the 20,376 votes (50.2 percent) in the Daily News' online  poll.

Palmetto Ridge football player Evan Rodriguez was second in the poll with 6,898 votes (33.9 percent), followed by First Baptist golfer Pearl Jenkins with 1,291 votes (6.4 percent).

A new Athlete of the Week poll will be posted at 7 a.m. each Monday, and voting is open until 10 a.m. Thursday. Winners receive an Athlete of the Week T-shirt by BSN SPORTS as well as a Naples Daily News gift bag. A video featuring the winner will be posted Thursday on naplesnews.com.

The nominees for Oct. 14-19 were: 

Football Offense

Evan Rodriguez, Palmetto Ridge – Threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bears to a 41-16 win over Barron Collier

Football Defense

Collin Miles, Naples – Returned a fumble for a touchdown to start the scoring in Naples’ 49-14 win over Golden Gate

Boys Cross Country

Brady Gibson, Naples – Won the Collier County Athletic Conference race in 16:49.48 to lead the Eagles to the team title

Girls Cross Country

Sonia Lountchenko, Palmetto Ridge – Took first place individually at the CCAC meet, winning in 21:06.72

Boys Golf

Jack Wehle, Gulf Coast – Shot a second-place score of 72 to lead the Sharks to the Class 3A-District 12 championship

Girls Golf

Pearl Jenkins, First Baptist – Finished second after shooting a 78 at the 1A-11 tournament, leading the Lions to their first district title

Volleyball

Zara Stewart, First Baptist – Had 34 digs and 18 aces in two district tournament games leading the Lions to the Class 2A-District 12 title
