Minnesota farmer concerned corn won’t store well
A southeast Minnesota farmer says he has a bad feeling about storing this year’s corn crop.
Ed McNamara of Goodhue tells Brownfield most of his crop died prematurely following a hard freeze last week.
“I don’t know how that’s going to translate into possibly having corn that’s (got a) light test weight. Looking at the kernels, the kernels on the end are hard. But I don’t know, I’ve got a feeling this corn isn’t going to dry very well.”
He says he’ll need to plan on the assumption his 2019 corn has a short shelf life.
“There’s going to be a lot of fines, which are going to be hard to push air through to keep it in condition.”
With hardly any corn harvested and more rain over the weekend, McNamara says leaving the crop until next spring is becoming more of a possibility.
