MERIDIAN TWP. — Police have identified a Michigan State University student who died Friday after a crash involving a moped and a pickup truck.

Sebastian Tyll, a 20-year-old from Fenton, was driving the moped about 7:30 a.m. when it collided with the truck at the intersection of Mt. Hope and Hagadorn roads near the university campus.

"The thoughts and prayers of the MSU community are with the family and friends of the crash victim," the university said in a statement Saturday afternoon.

According to the statement, the university's Office of Student Affairs has reached out to the family to provide support.

Campus community members personally affected by the tragedy can access resources through MSU's Counseling and Psychiatric Services. More information on those services is available at caps.msu.edu.

Crash still under investigation

Meridian Township Police said Tyll was driving north on Hagadorn Road and attempted to turn west onto Mt. Hope Road. The truck was traveling south on Hagadorn and the two vehicles crashed.

Police said Tyll was wearing a helmet and the driver of the truck, who has not yet been identified, was wearing a seat belt. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, police said.

The crash investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Meridian Township Police Department at 853-4800 or submit an anonymous tip through the department's social media sites.

Second student death in moped crash this year

Tyll is the second MSU student to die in a moped crash this year.

Tiana Seville, a 21-year-old junior at MSU, died in January after a crash involving a salt truck

Adam Young was driving a university salt truck on campus near the intersection of Shaw Lane and Chestnut Road just before 8 a.m. Jan. 15 when he collided with Seville.

A misdemeanor charge of moving violation causing death against Young, a 22-year-old from Laingsburg, is set to go to trial next month in 54B District Court.

Young, a staff member at MSU who works with Infrastructure Planning and Facilities as a landscape services equipment operator, is scheduled to return for a final pretrial conference Nov. 8 with jury selection and a trial to follow on Nov. 12, 18 and 19.
