An initial attempt by police to track down an unidentified person who passed a forged check last month led to a significant drug bust in a Chambersburg hotel room Wednesday.

Jennifer McDonald, 38, and Devon Legrand, 32, both Chambersburg residents, are facing felony charges related to the manufacture, delivery or possession of a controlled substance, according to court documents.

Chambersburg police arrived at the Clairion Inn and Suites on Lincoln Way East and identified a vehicle associated with the person they were looking for. The Nissan Altima they had identified in a previous surveillance tape was registered to McDonald.

Police made contact with McDonald in room 107, where Legrand answered the door. Legrand confirmed that he had driven the vehicle on the date of the forgery.

A strong odor of marijuana emanating from the room was noted in court documents. Both McDonald and Legrand admitted to smoking marijuana in the room the evening before and told police there was more in the room.

A search warrant was executed, where authorities discovered marijuana, "numerous bundles" of heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia including "cutting agents," packaging materials and digital scales, according to court documents.

A silver Smith & Wesson .40 caliber magazine was found in the bathroom of the room. McDonald told police the gun was in her car.

Documents showed McDonald had paid cash for several nights at the hotel, despite being unemployed.

McDonald was jailed on $100,000 bail. Legrand was jailed on $300,000 bail.

Both are scheduled to appear in court before Magisterial District Judge Glenn Manns for preliminary hearings on Oct. 29.

Meth discovered through controlled buy

In an unrelated case, police apprehended a Shippensburg man on similar charges on June 23, documents filed this week showed.

Tyler Ewan, 29, faces a felony charge for the manufacture, delivery or possession of a controlled substance, according to court documents.

Pennsylvania State Police set up a controlled buy at a Budget Inn with a confidential informant on the evening of June 23.

Upon arrival, the confidential informant left her vehicle and walked into a store nearby. This prompted Ewan to mistake the trooper's surveillance vehicle as his customer's. Ewan nearly got into the passenger seat, but then noticed the correct vehicle and headed toward it.

The confidential informant gave police a small plastic bag with a white crystal substance.

Test results from Harrisburg Regional Laboratory confirmed on Sept. 23 that the substance was .36 grams of methamphetamines.

Ewan was placed in jail on $25,000 bail.

He is scheduled to appear before Magisterial District Judge Glenn Manns for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 29.
